When I make fresh green beans at home, I usually saute up a chopped onion and chopped platter bacon, then add a little chicken broth and the beans, cover and cook until crisp tender. Season with salt and pepper and serve. My mom made canned green beans this way when i was a kid, and I've loved it ever since! You can also saute one clove garlic, minced, and sliced mushrooms with the bacon and onion and then add the beans, chicken broth, heavy cream or cream of mushroom soup to the mix for a more festive dish.

Here are some web sites I found that use bacon and the fried onions in the gren bean casserole. I'm tempted to try one of them, they really sound great. Hope this helps.
you can use both, cook your bacon ahead of time and crumble, set aside. go ahead and bake your casserole and prior to removing top with bacon and maybe shredded cheddar and cook 5-7 mins, becareful not to burn bacon, turn heat down, if necessary.
